Miss Lucy May [Maisie] Holt

1900-2003

Her death was announced on Saturday 25th October at her home, Ivy Hall, Mill Square, Wootton. She was born in the Isle of Man in 1900, and was family member of the Alfred Holt & Co, Blue Funnel Line, Liverpool. The Holt family were originally from Rochdale, a textile town in Lancashire.

She studied firstly at the University of London and later Cambridge, gaining a fellowship at there for her research into psychology and neurology. She was responsible and carried out the first effective treatment of dyslexia at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London.

In addition to her academic achievements at Cambridge, Miss Holt gained a Froebel Training and Teacher’s Certificate, enabling her to teach children at high schools in Greenock and Brackley.

She later became the head of Demonstration Nursery School and a senior lecturer in education at the University of London. Gaining a Froebel Trainer’s Diploma for lecturing and training of student teachers.

In 1935 she took part in an investigation for the BBC on the use of radio in schools across the country.

She had spells working as a medical psychologist at the Lady Chichester Hospital, Hove, Sussex and the Addenbrooks Hospital, Cambridge, before taking a post with the IW County Council as its first educational psychologist in 1942.

During her time on the Island she was involved in art and literary societies, including the Isle of Wight Society and together with Sir Michael West purchased and restored the Quay Arts Centre, Newport.

The funeral service took place at St Mary’s Catholic Church, Ryde followed by cremation at Wootton.
