Reginald Hutton

1865-1945

This death was reported in the March 10, edition of the Isle of Wight County Press at the age of 80. He was the fifth son of the late James F. Hutton who was one of the founders of the British East Africa Company and Congo Free State also a director of the Royal Niger Company and first M.P. for North Manchester.

Reginald Hutton himself was the managing director of the shipping company James F. Hutton of Manchester and retired in 1920. He first came to the island in his father’s yacht Adeona [built by Samuel White & Co] in 1877. From 1914-1918 he rented Oaklawn, Wootton. Woodside from Dowager Countess Cowley finally purchasing the property in 1920.

Owing to ill health he was forced to live a quiet life but was well respected by all who knew him. Before his health finally deteriorated he was a churchwarden at St Edmunds for 17 years.

He was educated at St Paul’s School, Stoney Stratford and Heidelberg Germany; he was a keen yachtsman and golfer in his younger days. On the island he was a member of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club.

He leaves a wife Gwendolen who he married in 1898; a son Commodore Hutton R.N. [later Rear Admiral] and a daughter Joy married to Lt-Col W. Kay.

The funeral was at St Edmunds with Rev Genower officiating.

Note: Several years later his son Rear Admiral R. M. J. Hutton moved to the island and took up residence at Oaklawn
