The history of Wootton Bridge
This site has been developed by two residents of the village namely Roy Murphy and Roy Richardson with the intention of preserving the village history for future generations. The task we set ourselves was, to collate both written and pictorial information from as many sources as possible before it was irrevocably lost in the sands of time. In order to give the viewer an overall picture of Wootton Bridge and the surrounding area, both passed and present we have broken down the presentation into two major sections, Library and Gallery, The library in turn has been sub divided into a series of major sub sections, which are
Estates, is intended to provide the reader with information about the major land holdings which were a feature of the village at the turn twentieth century together with maps.
Properties and People, again around 1900 there were a number of large houses within Wootton, which were the home to people of note, some still exist but others have been lost.
Churches, the village has a church dating back to Norman times, there are others but some, which have an interesting history, are sadly now closed and have been lost.
Schools, the history of the village schools from 1867 until present day.
Holiday camps, this charts the development of tourism within Wootton from the 1930s.
Under the headings of General and Parishes we have included a wide diversity of subjects.
Within the Gallery we present a large collection of photographs of Wootton dating from 1880 until almost present day. These photographs have been loan to us by people who support the project and allowed them to be scanned and displayed to them must go our thanks.
What of the future, we are continuing our research and would welcome any contribution on our local history, either in the form of information or photographic record for insertion onto the site. We would also like to hear from anyone where ever you may be, and found the site interesting, or could offer suggestion for improvements, please contact the webmaster, details below.
